Your Career Is Not Your Purpose | Breaking the Spell of Work & Worth

Your career does not have a direct correlation with your worth or your purpose.

The idea that it does is relatively modern. As we moved into a more industrialised, capitalist way of living, our jobs became increasingly tied to our sense of worth and status.

And yes, of course humans have always had work, roles and trades. I'm not suggesting that people suddenly started working when industrialisation arrived. What changed was the way we began to organise society around employment, and we began to build our identity and worth on productivity, status and financial value.

Before that it was more deeply rooted in our place within family and community. It was nourished by our faiths, cultures and traditions. It was found within the things that we grew, cared for, created and crafted.

Our identity was not our job title, and our value was not held by this alone. In society, we can see so clearly the hierarchy and status that comes from job titles and the amount we earn.

But who does this really serve, you or them?

If you love your career, wonderful, but how much of your purpose do you hold in that alone? If it was taken from you, would you feel empty and like you didn’t have a place.

You have purpose beyond the job that you do. You are important and valuable, because of the human that you are, period.

Purpose is so multifaceted. It can be found and lived in so many ways, as long as we are willing to look beyond the conditioned value system we have been given.

The human experience means we all have something to contribute to the world. We just have to listen to what that truth is for us, and have the courage to honour it.

By society’s standards, Heart Medicine would likely be deemed a failure. Actually, probably my entire reality: 37, no husband, no children, living with my parents.

And I have worked hard to dismantle the conditioning, and quiet the voices, that had me believing I’ve failed. I know now that I hold worth and value. I know I contribute greatly to the micro that is my reality, and also to the macro of the world.

My life does not need to look successful by someone else's measurements to be meaningful.

Has this made you question the structures you've been taught to build your identity around?

Breaking the Spell is a ritual ceremony for dismantling conditioned beliefs and patterns that no longer serve us, and create space for something more meaningful and aligned to take their place.
